Jump at the chance of getting roped in to abseil down Reading's tallest building for the hospital robot appeal. The charity abseil will take on the dizzy heights of The Blade's 128-metre tall structure that stands proud above the town, offering a unique opportunity to take in the sights as well as completing a daredevil challenge. Taking to the roof of The Blade brave participants will abseil down all 14 floors, the equivalent of 32 double decker buses.

WELL at least we have come to the end of the debacle of a general election. It will be interesting to see if the incumbent party sticks to its promise, like all the others promised before the election, that they would support sea anglers. Or will it just be like Labour's White Paper years ago on sea angling, which some how got lost in the waste bin.

Well done, you! You increased your majority by a good few thousand, and with Martin Salter out of the picture, this makes Reading a fully Tory town. You must be really pleased.

THE Tories have regained Reading West after 13 years of Labour control. Victorious Alok Sharma cruised to victory with 20,523, ahead of Labour's Naz Sarkar on 14,519. He said: "I want to thank all of those who voted for me tonight. I am humbled by the trust you put in me and it will be a great honour to serve you."

I want to pay tribute to Alok, he fought a very good campaign. I would like to pay tribute to Martin Salter, he has worked very hard over the last 12 years. I'd also like to pay tribute to my very vocal team who have been phenomenal. You might think five or six thousand votes is quite cosy, but we'll be back!   -Naz Sarkar

A SURGE in votes for the Conservative party is painting the Royal County of Berkshire blue. With Richard Benyon increasing his majority to 12,248 in Newbury, together with wins in Bracknell, Windsor and Maidenhead, the county is awash with blue on political maps detailing the General Election results. And with Alok Sharma seizing control in Reading West, replacing the outgoing Labour stalwart Martin Salter, the county is turning more and more blue with every result.

Calls for otters to be removed from the wild to allow rivers to replenish themselves with fish were yesterday branded as "nonsense" by a leading Westcountry expert. Martin Salter, former Labour MP for Reading West and an angling campaigner, said the "apex predators" were in danger of decimating fish stocks in British rivers and damaging commercial fisheries. He accused conservationists of acting irresponsibly by releasing otters without checking there was enough food to sustain them.
